Different Kind of Cover Love

I mentioned last week (or maybe the week before) that I was agonizing over the premise of a free read I wanted to put up on my site for Valentine’s Day. The good news is I’ve finally figured things out, I’ve got the scenes up on my storyboard and I’ve started writing it.

I’ve also been working on a cover for it. Me! I’ve never really done anything like it before so it was a bit daunting and exciting at the same time. I was pleased with how it turned out for the most part, but after some good feedback, I’ll be going back in and playing with the text a bit.

I don’t think I’ll be switching my focus to graphic design anytime soon, but it was a fun project.

What about you? Have you ever tried your hand at graphic design? How did it go? Is it something you’d like to pursue?

Hey Riley! I'd be interested in hearing about the steps you took to make your cover. I played around with graphics stuff when I made the book trailer for Ring of Lies (which was frustrating :), and I paid for a subscription to Picnik so I could photoshop pictures of Savannah; trying to make them eerie for my Paige Stewart stories was ... challenging! I don't think I have the patience for graphic design work and I gained a lot of respect for cover artists after working with those pics. It is not as easy as it looks!
Good Luck! Maybe you can get a blog post out of the experience!

Hey Rachel,

My hubby had installed the latest version of the Gimp software on my machine. He was going to walk me through it on Friday night but during the day, I just opened it up and found the help manual.

I had bought the images I wanted the night before so I just went at it. If you use that software, I can share the little bit I learned, although you may want to wait until next week to see if you like what I did. :)
